Carlile dodges baby blues

Former Showdown players Darryl Wakelin and Darren Mead have a kick on the new Adelaide Oval ahead of the Port Adelaide Legends game.

PORT Adelaide is confident full back Alipate Carlile will not miss the historic first Showdown at Adelaide Oval to attend the birth of his first child.

Carlile and partner Jo Sutton, a former Adelaide Thunderbirds netballer, are expecting the arrival of their baby next week, but the Power has put key backman Tom Clurey on standby in case matters change.

Clurey has had an outstanding pre-season and was particularly impressive when standing St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt in a practice match at Alberton Oval.

Port coach Kenny Hinkley said it was unlikely Carlile would need to miss as Port completed its final training session at Adelaide Oval on Friday morning.

But he was strong in his sentiments what he would like Carlile to do should the birth clash with the match against the Crows.

``If that happened, I'd like him to attend the birth of his child,'' Hinkley said. ``That's more important.''

Hinkley has never had to deal with the issue before, with his children born outside of the football season and none of his teammates during his career with Fitzroy and Geelong being forced to make the choice.
